SEO audit checklist for beginners

Topics in this guide
Topic 1 · What an audit is
What is an SEO audit?
An SEO audit is a review of a website to find problems that may make it harder to use, understand or find through search.
Start with one page. Check what a visitor can see and do, then ask for help with checks that need website or Search Console access.
Record what you saw
“The contact link opens a missing page” is a useful observation.
Avoid guessing the result
A checklist cannot promise a Google position or explain every traffic change.
This is a beginner manual review, not a full technical audit. Read SEO basics first.
Topic 2 · Visitor checks
Can a visitor use the page?
Open the actual page on a laptop and phone. Check the task the visitor came to complete.
- 1
Open the page. Does the main information appear? Record an error exactly instead of assuming why it happened.
- 2
Read the heading. Can you tell what the page is about?
- 3
Use important links. Test the next step, contact link and relevant navigation.
- 4
Check a narrow screen. Is the text readable? Can you use menus and buttons without content covering them?
A quick visual check is not a measured speed test. If you record a performance result, name the tool, date and test conditions.
Topic 3 · Content checks
Does the page answer the right question?
Useful content explains the subject clearly and gives the visitor enough accurate information to continue.
Main answerCan you find it easily?
Check whether the introduction and headings match the page’s purpose. Important details should not be buried under repeated sales messages.
AccuracyCan the claims be supported?
Check prices, dates, contact details, sources and statements about results. Flag old or unsupported information for review.
Clear wordingDoes it sound natural?
Remove unnecessary repetition. Do not fill every sentence with the same search phrase.
Useful next linksWhere can the visitor go next?
Use clear link labels that describe the destination. Check whether another existing page already answers a related question.
Use the keyword research guide to understand the page’s search need.
Topic 4 · Access and indexing
Which checks need more access?
A page opening in your browser does not prove that Google has indexed it.
An authorised owner can use Search Console’s URL Inspection report to review a URL. Read the reported status and the details before choosing a fix. Do not change indexing settings just because a checklist has a box to fill.
A simple example
A practice bakery page opens normally, but you do not have Search Console access. Record “browser check passed; indexing not checked”. That is more accurate than marking every check as passed.
What about broken links or duplicate pages?
Record the affected URLs and what you found. Ask the site owner to review the right fix. Do not delete pages or add redirects without understanding the content and destination.
Advanced checks can include crawling, canonical URLs, robots settings, structured data and performance. Get technical help where needed.
Topic 5 · Your checklist
Record your manual page review
Record what happened only after doing the check. Leave anything you have not tested as “Not checked”.
Topic 6 · Choose the next fix
What should you fix first?
Begin with a specific issue that stops a visitor from using or understanding the page.
- 1
Name the issue. Record the page, the part affected and what happens.
- 2
Choose a suitable fix. Ask the right person to review technical or factual changes.
- 3
Check again after the change. Repeat the original visitor task and record the result.
Is a high SEO score enough?
No single tool score describes the whole visitor experience or guarantees rankings. Understand the individual checks and their limits.
Can this be a portfolio project?
Yes. Label a practice review honestly, include your observations and explain proposed fixes. Do not claim an improvement you did not measure.
Use the portfolio template to explain your work.
