Digital Marketing Portfolio for Beginners: What to Include

A portfolio is a small collection of your work with a short explanation of each example. It helps someone understand what you made, what your role was and how you think.

A few clear examples are a useful starting point.

Can I make a portfolio without a client?

Yes. You can include sample projects created for practice. Label them clearly so nobody mistakes a fictional brief for paid client work.

A sample bakery page can show your writing, layout and link checks. It cannot prove that you generated enquiries if the page never ran for a real business.

What kind of work can I include?

Choose examples that fit the work you want to do. For content, show a useful page or a short content plan. For SEO, show a page review and explain your suggested changes.

For paid ads, a clearly labelled draft campaign plan can show your audience, message and budget thinking. Explain that a plan is not a live campaign. Include the pieces you can discuss confidently.

What should I write beside each example?

Explain the goal, your contribution, your important decisions and what you checked. Add a screenshot, file or working link so the reader can see the work.

If it was a group project, name your part. If a trainer gave feedback, explain the revision you made without presenting the whole team’s work as yours.

Do I need impressive results?

Only include results you can support. State the dates, where the figures came from and what they measure. Say when the data is simulated, from a demo account or too limited to judge.

You can explain what you learned even when a project has no business results. For example: “I tested the page links and changed a button label because its destination was unclear.”

What should I leave out?

Remove private customer details, passwords and confidential account information. Get permission before sharing client material. Check that your screenshots do not expose personal information.

Keep navigation simple. A reader should be able to open an example, understand your role and find the next one without searching through many folders.

Remember: Make every example easy to open, easy to understand and honest about your contribution.
