How to Check Your Digital Marketing Work: A Beginner’s Guide

Start with a simple question: can the right person understand the message and take the intended next step? Then check the details and any results you report.

Impact Digital Marketing Institute: Check the message, the action and the evidence.
Check the message, the action and the evidence.

Can someone understand it quickly?

Look at your post or page as a new visitor. Can they tell what is being offered, who it is for and what to do next?

For a made-up bakery, “Order a birthday cake” gives more direction than “Celebrate happiness with us.” A creative line can still be useful, but the customer needs the practical details too.

Do the important details work?

Read the names, prices, dates and contact details carefully. Check that images are clear and that text is readable on a phone.

Open the links. If a button says “See cake options,” it should lead to those options. Test a form using safe test details and check what happens after submission. Get permission before testing a real business process.

Impact Digital Marketing Institute: Check a sample bakery page. Message: Can visitors see the cake options? Action: Can they find out how to order? Evidence: What did you actually measure?

Does it match the audience and goal?

A local offer should tell people which area it covers. A beginner guide should explain unfamiliar words. A page meant to get enquiries needs a clear way to contact the business.

Explain your choices in relation to the task. “I made the delivery area easier to find” is more useful feedback than “I made the design better.”

What if the design gets likes?

Likes show one kind of response. They do not tell you by themselves whether the business received suitable enquiries or sales.

If you have data, use the correct dates and explain what each number measures. A small amount of data may not be enough to judge a change. If tracking is missing, report that limit.

How should you improve the work?

Choose a specific problem, such as unclear wording or a broken link. Make the change, check it again and record why you changed it.

You can learn report reading with Google’s Analytics demo account. Its data belongs to the demo business; analysing it is practice, not a campaign result you produced.

Remember: Good feedback names a problem and a reason. That makes the next change easier.

Put the checks into a small project

Explore a sample page brief and keep a short record of what you checked.
